The Role

The Global Safety & Security (GSS) Manager is responsible for setting the strategic direction, governance and decision making within the Global Safety & Security (GSS) Team. The role also provides guidance and advice to cross company committees at various levels including the Board, to set the company’s strategic approach to fulfilling its legal, contractual, and moral duty of care, as well as providing sign off for travel. Overseeing the development and implementation of Itad’s safety & security management framework, alongside operationalising Itad’s policies and procedures that are embedded across the company is a key responsibility of the role.

The GSS Manager will continue to develop and grow the team that are responsible for managing travel & security within a predefined risk appetite on behalf of Itad. The GSS team responds to a changing scope of Itad’s global deployments as the company grows, leading to more deployments to high & extreme risk areas such as Afghanistan, Somalia, and the Ukraine. The team draws on external expertise delivered by our trusted travel and security suppliers, whilst also maintaining excellent communications with the rest of the organisation, generating awareness, insight, and engagement in safety & security issues and practices.

1. Delivery of international travel within Itad’s Global Safety and Security risk appetite.

Working in collaboration with Global Safety and Security (GSS), Project and Safeguarding teams, the GSS Manager oversees all travel taking place on behalf of Itad, ensuring deployments occur in line with our GSS framework utilising policies and procedures including risk assessment, mitigation measures, liaison with travellers and providing out of hours support. This also includes processes pre, during, and after deployment.

The role is further responsible in proposing particular high and extreme risk deployments to Itad’s Audit, Risk & Resilience Committee, working together to identify and provide particular mitigants leading to travel approval within the defined risk appetite. This responsibility also extends to advising our proposal development and bidding team in safe methodologies for future projects within a commercial budget.

The GSS Manager acts as the main point of contact with our third-party providers that Itad frequently engages with when addressing safety and security risk (such as travel insurers, commercial security providers, and independent consultants), and closely monitors their services to ensure competence and value for money.

2. Strategic development and embedding of Itad’s GSS framework and policy.

Working in collaboration with Itad’s retained specialist security advisors, the GSS Manager is required to ensure Itad’s GSS framework is up-to-date, relevant, and fit for purpose including its interaction with safeguarding steps and procedures.

The GSS Manager will work closely with the Project Management Unit to ensure cross-company working and understanding of Itad’s Safety & Security framework, including inductions, training and the development of online courses. This also includes promoting our duty of care to external partners and suppliers.

3. Facilitate cross business committees and the evolution of Itad’s risk appetite.

Working with Itad’s Board level Audit, Risk, and Resilience Committee, and drawing support from external security advisors, the GSS Manager will monitor all deployments against Itad’s risk appetite, including rolling country assessments. In addition, the role will also chair the Travel, Safety and Security Committee to discuss and agree in country mitigation, approval of travel to high-risk areas, and the approach to providing support to national consultants. Importantly, the role owns the management of Itad’s risk appetite setting facilitating and providing information that contributes to final approvals as provided by the Audit, Risk, and Resilience Committee.

The role acts as a core member of Itad’s Crisis Management Team, with an additional responsibility to ensure the company has a trained team of primary and secondary core members and additional external members that would be drawn on for support. This includes ensuring its members receive appropriate engagement and training.

4. Leadership and management of GSS team.

As the company grows the GSS Manager is responsible for ensuring the GSS team are adequately resourced, trained, and able to service business requirements through the development of annual business planning and benchmarking. The responsibility extends to oversight of Itad’s Duty Officer rota, ensuring continuity and capability of its members, as well as performing the Duty Officer role itself.

This role also includes input to the collective management and direction of the wider team that the GSS team sits, providing opportunities for career progression for the Manager and the GSS team.
