Training

1. Security training

Resources & Tools

Training is a vital part of improving the security awareness and management capacity of staff. All staff should receive appropriate safety and security training, relevant to their role and the environment in which they work.

Staff must be provided with the necessary security awareness and skills to enable them to manage their own security as well as that of their colleagues.

Security training programmes often include three distinct levels of training:

  • Basic Security & Safety Awareness – provided to staff as part of their induction/orientation. Focuses on the organisation’s security policies and approach and making staff aware of the risks and challenges they may face during their work.
  • Personal Security & Safety – aimed at staff working in moderate-risk environments. Provides greater awareness of security and safety risks and how to reduce and respond to them. In high-risk contexts, a more advanced level of security training or Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) may be required to deal with increased threats.
  • Security Risk Management – aimed at staff with security management responsibilities (security focal points, office and programme managers). Training introduces the core concepts of security management and develops skills to manage security and safety risks to staff and programmes, within their specific operating context.

Certain groups of staff may require additional security and safety training, for example critical incident management training for senior managers or role-specific security training for guards and drivers.
